I had a similar experience when I was in high school. Me and four other people I knew had a dream about a native american elderly man all within the same week. He had grey hair and braids.

I love pigs. I love pork. I can't decide whether to eat them or keep them for a pet. A friend has long wanted to have a fire pit roasted hog party. I was looking at mock duck, which is a site filled with old crazy recipes of days gone by and came upon this:

Hawaiian Pit-Cooked Pig

1 leg (10 to 15 pounds) fresh pork
Marinade:
1 can (6 oz.) frozen lime juice or frozen lemonade
1/2 gallon dry sherry
3 tablespoons seasoning salt
1 or 2 small fingers of ginger root, grated or crushed
1 cup frozen or canned papaya, or about half of a fresh papaya, mashed
1/3 cup soy
1 large clove garlic, peeled and crushed

Have the butcher bone and trim off all excess fat, then roll the meat. Mix together all marinade ingredients. Marinate meat overnight.

Start your fire in a rock-lined pit about 8 a.m., and by noon the pit should be full of glowing embers. Remove pork leg from marinade, wrap in ti leaves (available from florists), then in clean sheeting, then in burlap. Tie with wire, which serves as a handle. Saturate the burlap and sheeting with the remaining marinade, then bury the meat in coals. Cover the coals with sand and dirt until you no longer see any smoke.

About 8 p.m., remove the meat and serve. Makes 16 to 24 servings, depending on appetites.

If you should decide to make this in your rock-lined pit, please, please, please invite me for dinner (I'll make the Mai Tai's).

My vegetarian friends might not show up, but eh you can't please everyone all the time.

Video Game Review: Tales of Vesparia XBOX 360

I hate RPGs for the most part, they seem tedious and long winded to me. Tales of Vesparia satisfied my need for button mashing punch-kicky and that seems to be what I craved when it came to this genre of gaming. I'm more interested in action and reward then hunting around, grinding and leveling up when I play video games. I loved this game, although I personally don't give it much replay value. The colors are fantastic and the graphics are beautifully illustrated. The creators really seemed to delve into stylizing the characters and giving them emotion and their own personalities. The storyline was good but could be quite long winded and a tad bit confusing at times. The monster illustrations show imagination and the bosses are fantastic. One of the best parts of this game is the local multi-player function. J and I got to play it together. I played as Yuri, the hero; and he was Repede, his faithful canine companion. Although you could choose to play as any of your party's members at before any battles, we often stuck to the same characters. I'm sure it was just because we had memorized our character's special moves and had their preferences set just right. Another great feature about this game is that the members of your party level up even if they aren't involved in battle. One downfall of the local multiplayer feature is game acheivement points can only be gained by the main profile player. J is currently playing his own profile just to get those points he missed out on. I had rented this game through Gamefly and we were a little confused without the manual about some of the features in the game. We purchased it and much was cleared up after having access to the instructions. Cooking in the game is a great way to save your player's potions. I underestimated it's value until late in the game. Recipes are hidden throughout the game and released to you by a chef disguised as a different item in each city. Overall, I highly recommend this game if you are looking for something to immerse yourself in.

What does light really mean? What can Fat Free do for me? Here's the skinny on why it's not as great as you think:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows the following definitions on food labels:
FAT-FREE: The product has less than .5 grams of fat per serving.
LOW-FAT: The product has 3 grams or less of fat per serving.
REDUCED or LESS FAT: The product has at least 25% less fat per serving than the full-fat version.

# The sodium content of a low-calorie, low-fat food is 50 percent less than the non-light version.

Movie Review: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

I've written about Miyazaki before, here Lin k.
I have not seen this classic animated film until last Sunday. I was drinking imitation Trudy's Mexican Martinis and laying on the couch. This film was awesome. Here is the wiki. Studio Ghibli is Miyazaki's animation company. I highly recommend this film. One of my favorite aspects of Miyazaki's stories is that the heroes are girls most of the time. The drawing and character design is both classic and original. The dialogue is complex without being too heavy. The story is engaging, and the voice acting is spot on. There are a ton of famous actors in Nausicaa such as Cameron Diaz and Shia Lebouf. My only regret is not seeing the film sooner. Watch this, you won't regret it!

Leptin- I will balance you

My best friend is a personal trainer and massage therapist. She looks great, so she has to have the answers. I've been complaining about my overeating and general malaise and she told me about this book. Here's a tidbit about Leptin:

The Five Rules of Mastering Leptin

1. Never eat after dinner. Never go to bed on a full stomach. Leave a gap of 11-12 hours between dinner and breakfast as the best fat burn zone occurs 8 and 12 hours after eating. If you snack before bedtime, the leptin tells your brain that no energy is required and therefore no fat burning will occur during the night.

2. Eat 3 meals per day. Allow 5-6 hours between meals with no snacks inbetween. Snacks would only stimulate the relase of insulin and while that happens, the body is not burning fat. If you find it difficult to eat only 3 meals per day, start with 4 per day. In time, with regular exercise, it will be easier and easier for you to leave 5 hours between meals.

3. Do not eat large meals. If you provide your body with more fuel than it needs, leptin and insulin resistance can result. You can learn to reduce meal sizes by eating slowly and chewing properly, also by putting the fork down from time to time. This will give your appetite the chance to catch up with your food intake.

4. Eat a high-protein breakfast. This supports blood sugar levels throughout the day and will minimize afternoon energy crashes. These energy crashes in the afternoon are often due to eating a breakfast with too many carbohydrates and too little protein. People who eat a high carbohydrate breakfast and who are leptin resistant are more likely to overeat.

5. Reduce the amount and glycemic index of carbohydrates eaten. This doesn’t mean that you can only eat very low or very restricted carbohydrates, but that you should match the amount of starchy carbohydrates with the same portion of proteins. You may eat fibrous vegetables in abundance. There’s an easy way to find out if you are eating too many carbohydrates. Weigh yourself in the morning and at bedtime. If your bedtime weight is more than 2 pounds over your morning weight and if you followed rules 1-4 during the day, then you consumed too many carbohydrates that day.

The authors developed these five rules after making an in-depth stuy of all the leptin research studies so far (approximately 9000) and combined this with experiences with clients. The aim of these rules is to restore the body’s sensitivity to leptin and by that re-establish the body’s ability to efficiently produce energy from food which will lead to weight loss and better health.

The Meat Sweats

Have you ever had "the meat sweats"? Last night was the second time I have had the experience. I partake in eating meat whenever possible. It's almost always a good thing - bacon, cheeseburgers, steak, brisket, sausage ... you get the picture. Before Christmas I went to visit some relatives in Dallas and they kindly introduced me to Fogo de Chão. Dinner was delicious and expensive. I couldn't help feeling guilty about eating an insane amount of animals while other people in the world are starving. I'm glad for the experience but I will probably never go again. I encountered the meat sweats that night. For those of you unfamiliar, here is how the urban dictionary defines "the meat sweats"-
A condition experienced during sleep characterized by significant discomfort, sweating, and delusional dreams that is triggered by the consumption of large amounts of cured or smoked meats. Condition is related to the high levels of nitrates and salts in the cured meat.
That worries me a little. What do nitrates do to a person when consumed in quantities? I'm not sure yet, but I'm guessing it's not good. Last night my parents were in town and they took James and I out to dinner to Rudy's Barbeque. It was glorious, but again the meat sweats. The conclusion is that I really just need to not eat so much but I can't help myself. It's MEAT!

I often feel shame for the way I believe. It's a natural response of humans to shun those who do not look, act or believe the same as themselves. That does not make it right. Many christians feel threatened or pity me if I speak of god not existing. It automatically makes me a devil worshiper. Quite the contrary. I noticed a difference between the way I play video games and how my male friends play. When I play the same game as my male counterparts, it seems they want to win every time on the first try. It doesn't bother me to get a lower score or lose every once in a while. I'm in it for the experience. Finally, someone chose to investigate the matter.Here is an article from the Telegraph in which scientists explain male drive to conquer as triggering a reward center in the brain.

"Playing on computer consoles activates parts of the male brain which are linked to rewarding feelings and addiction, scans have shown. The more opponents they vanquish and points they score, the more stimulated this region becomes.

In contrast, these parts of women's brains are much less likely to be triggered by sessions on the Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Wii or Xbox.

Someone is finally trying to answer the age old question of why our family makes us crazy during the holidays. I am to the point of not celebrating anything ever again because of the stress that comes with being around these people. I tried really hard to not fight with my mom this year and thought I had successfully made it though this year without a scrape. Oh no, she called me shortly after we left and managed to piss me off so much I could barely talk to her. Many people have this problem, which surprised me because no one ever talks about it. I thought I was one of the few.

"Visiting -- or even just viewing photos of family members -- prompts brain activity that affects how you feel about them, your friends, and even yourself, a new study suggests.

The study is the first to compare brain activity associated with seeing relatives with that linked to seeing friends and strangers. It suggests our feelings about biological relatives are at least somewhat primal.

The findings may help explain everything from why our family can get on our nerves to why people who look like us can spark immediate feelings of trust, "but not lust," said Steven Platek, who co-authored the study with Shelly Kemp.

"We like to be around people that look more like us, but we do not find them as sexually attractive," added Platek, editor-in-chief of the journal Frontiers in Evolutionary Neuroscience. Movie Review: Uzumaki

This film is based on a Japanese manga of the same name. Unfortunately, the film was finished before the manga, which is why I believe the end of the film wasn't very good. Uzumaki the film was a bit of a disappointment. Uzumaki means spiral. The film leads you through things appearing in the village to people that have spirals occuring naturally in them. A snail's shell, hurricanes, smoke, and water in a drain all display this pattern naturally. I really thought it was an interesting plot and the story was plugging along nicely until it just... ended. No resolution. No explanation of why this town was affected by a spiral sickness. The audience is just left with nothing. It had pretty interesting art direction and so-so graphics. I really wanted it to "wow" me. There are some similarities in the story to the book "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. Would I recommend watching it? Probably not, unless you are really interested in Japanese horror films. The most interesting part of this film experience is that my dog found a large snail climbing up the outside of my house the day after we watched the movie. I had never one by my house until that day. Coincidence? Hmmm.

Shooting Zombies in the Face

We bought "Left 4 Dead" for XBOX 360 a while ago but I haven't had the opportunity to review it here yet. Ummm. It fucking rules! I have never considered myself a 1st person shooter fan but with the introduction to this game, I'm totally sold. The controls are instinctive and to the delight of M, you can crouch and walk at the same time. I usually play as the female character, Zoe who, for once is a fully clothed, fully capable woman in a video game. I haven't ever used the online player co-op mode of any game until we picked up this beauty. J and I play side by side and team up online with one of his coworkers. Our headsets insure that all our teammates can hear us browbeat those damn dirty zombies as we shoot them in the face. The graphics are great, the gameplay is seamless, it even shows stats at each chapter to heighten the competition. J usually dies the most and I usually take the most damage. I look forward to playing this game all day. It's something that helps me take out the aggression of work. Although if I play too close to bedtime I have zombie dreams. Really, what more could you ask for?As far as I'm concened, this game helps us prepare for the coming apocalypse.

Here's the situation:
I bought a present for someone on etsy.com. I love shopping on it because everything is made by hand and it supports individuals instead of corporate conglomerates. Little did I know I had found one seller who needs a straight jacket. When you purchase an item the site requests feedback on the seller and item you purchased. I gave this particular purchase neutral feedback because she shipped it late and the seller freaked out about it.
Let me display her emails and representation of customer service.

November 21st.
I placed the order.

November 26th
This is before I received the item:
"hi...i wanted to let you know that your item shipped a couple of days ago -- i apologize for not writing sooner but i had family issues and i got behind on my correspondence. paypal sent you notification of the shipment along with the tracking number for your package. i appreciate your purchase and hope you will visit again -- ot was a pleasure. happy thanksgiving! all the best, (name omitted)"

December 4th
I received the package.
December 9th
Bring on the craziness!
Here is the first email I received from the seller:

"not a word from you regarding any dis-satisfaction with yur purchase, and yet you eave me neutral feedback. do you have any idea how that damages a seller's reputation on etsy. this is the way i make my living. that was VERY unfair of you to NOT contact me and explain your dis-satisfaction FIRST, ALLOWING ME TO FIX WHATEVER WAS WRONG. i would GLADLY give you a refund or an exchange, or fix any problem perceived. i would like you to return the necklace to me. i can provide you with a prepaid addressed mailing label for this purpose. i would like to ask you to change your feedback based on my willingness to resolve any problems you might have. i excell at customer service but i cannot help you unless you COMMUNICATE. (please read the last part of my shop announcement which asks buyers to contact me first...) i will wait to hear from you before i leave feedback for you. this puts a very negative spin on this transaction and i am very sad and hurt by this. please, may i hear from you."

My reply:
I gave you NEUTRAL feedback because it shipped later then you stated. You sent me an email apologizing for the delay, which is fine but that doesn't constitute a great rating. Sending me a nasty email is not the way to provide great customer service. I suggest not being so sensitive about your ratings, the more customers you have the more your rating will vary.

Seller:
my email to you was not nasty. i questioned why you didn't contact me first and that question stands. i ship within 24 hours of receipt of payment, emergencies not withstanding. i cannot recall when your item shipped, but if it was delayed when i lost vision in my eyemm i am sorry. you receive notification from paypal when your item goes out. i cannot be responsible for delays by the USPS. read my feedback -- EVERYONE sapeaks of fast shipping. i will leave your feedback based on how this was handled. i had hoped we could have worked this out in an easy fashion. i am sorry you are so disappointed and i hope that this does not leave you not wanting to wear your ____, remembering this sad transaction.

Seller:
hi,,,i went ahead and left feedback for you. like yourself, i felt i had the right to leave feedback based on how the situation was ahndled. however, if you wish to use the "kiss and make up" feature offered by etsy, allowing us to change our mutual feedback to positive, i would be willing to participate in that with you. if not, then i will live with your neutral. perhaps you don't understand the importance of feedback on etsy. people judge you by the feedback left. saying i shouldn'be so sensitive when it comes to my feedback is like telling me not to care about my business or my reputation. i care very much about both. all i ask is that a buyer contact me if they are unhappy for any reason. i don't think that is unreasonable.

Here's the feedback she left for me with a negative rating:
"buyer faulted me for slow shipping by the post office. i am well known for my quick shipping within 24 hours of payment. buyer did not attempt to contact me first before leaving less than stellar feedback. i would be careful about dealing with this buyer because she will not communicate with a seller to express her feelings and allow a seller to offer anything to fix a situation -- she simply expresses herself in feedback. this was a very negative transaction for these reasons. i am quite saddened by this situation -- saddened and disappointed."

Me:
Why would you attack me like this? I looked at your feedback and it's 100% positive. My neutral rating isn't affecting you at all! Then you give me a negative rating. You are vindictive and very unprofessional. Grow up.

Seller:
"i considered your feedback an attack on me and my business. i felt your negative was deserved because you would not communiucate your issues with me before leaving feedback. you know nothing about me, who i am or how professional i am. think what you wish. bottom line here is this. i live with the neutral is you want to live with the negative. if you want to use the kiss and make up feature BOTH of those feedback can be changed to positive. if you do not wish to do that, that is your perogative. i will participate if you take the iniative. this is totally out of control. if you had just contacted me when you felt the shipping was slow and allowed me to present facts re. shipping (i should not be blamed for the post office's negligence...give them neutral feedback) -- none of this would have happened. we can fix this or we can leave it as is. that is up to you."

Me:
"You are trying to bully me into giving you good feedback. If I could, I would now change it to a negative review because of this email exchange you are having with me. This isn't the way to treat people whom you hope to do business with. I will not kiss and make up with you.(this is a way to resolve negative feedback through etsy) I don't care if I have negative feedback. People will read what you wrote and see how completely disrespectful your exchange with me was."

A couple of friends are coming to play board games on sunday and I am way excited! We will probably play a couple rounds of Munchkin. The best part is that you can intermix the cards of 2 of the games to come up with varying facets of play.
Another game we might play is Gloom. We bought it a while ago but have yet to play it with more then 2 players. I'm so excited! Now I should come up with some snacky stuff to make for my guests.

Obama: Proposes emergency cost-fighting measures such as a windfall-profits tax on largest oil companies to pay for energy rebates of up to $1,000 per couple and the release of up to 70 million barrels of oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserve to boost supplies. Obama: Proposes mandatory coverage for children, no mandate for adults. Aims for universal coverage by requiring larger employers to share costs of insuring workers and by offering coverage similar to that in plan for federal employees. Proposes spending $50 billion on information technology over five years to reduce health care costs over time.

EDUCATION

McCain: Proposes more money for community college education. Advocates expansion of District of Columbia's voucher program, but not a federal voucher program as he did in 2000. Sees No Child Left Behind law as vehicle for increasing opportunities for parents to choose school.

Obama: Proposes encouraging, but not mandating, universal pre-kindergarten; teacher pay raises tied to, although not based solely on, test scores; an overhaul of No Child Left Behind law to better measure student progress, make room for subjects like music and art, and be less punitive toward failing schools; and a tax credit to pay up to $4,000 of college costs for students who perform 100 hours of community service a year.

The current median income of an American household is $46,326. As you can see from the above chart over the past 40 years the top 10 percent of households have seen steady gains (the chart is based on 2003 dollars) while the other 90 percent of our population has seen virtually stagnant growth. That is why most American families may have more money on a nominal level but are actually poorer. What this graph displays is a disappearing of the middle class.

Stagnant wages are also part of the global market landscape. It is hard for American workers to compete with low wage nations yet our insatiable appetite for consumer goods has also led to this downfall. Look at the stock price of Wal-Mart. While the stock market is tanking they are up 14% on the year.

Although many like to beat on the global drum of keeping jobs here in the country, silently Americans are still voting with their pocketbook and buying foreign goods. It is hard to blame the middle class since they are being pinched from every different angle. The economic condition of many reflects this struggling sense of uncertainty.

Here's the situation: The mortgage companies gave loans to people who couldn't necessarily pay them back, then sold the loans to other companies packaged with some other loans that would be paid back. This happens a couple of different times and then the last company tries to collect and there isn't any money. The government has decided to bail these companies out with our money. Fuck that. That isn't capitalism. Anyone who makes poor business choices should not get bailed out. Small businesses don't get bailed out if they don't succeed. Many Americans have failed at their dreams and don't expect someone to just hand them cash and make it all better.
